Heart Changes in Alkalosis.

چکیده
Electrocardiographic findings in alkalosis were first noted in 1922 by Carter and Andrus, who observed that the Q-T interval was prolonged by more than 30 per cent in three of their cases; this was associated with a lowering of the blood calcium. Barker, Arbor, Shrader, and Ronzoni (1939) produced artificial alkalosis by voluntary overventilation or by ingestion of sodium bicarbonate, the Q-T interval being slightly increased by the latter procedure. In a hysterical patient with hyperventilation a similar effect was produced, but this did not exceed normal limits; a reduction of the T wave was also observed. An opportunity occurred recently of studying the cardiac function in alkalosis.

Effects of Changes in Coronary Blood Ph on the Heart.
• The effects of acidosis and alkalosis on the coronary circulation and myocardium of the intact animal have been studied during CO;, breathing," hyperventilation" and intravenous infusions of HC1, ° NaHCCV and tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane (THAM) . Changes in coronary blood flow were variable and, in general, insignificant. From these studies it is difficult to appraise the direct effects of...
متن کاملExtracellular pH changes activate the p38-MAPK signalling pathway in the amphibian heart.
We investigated the activation of the p38-MAPK signalling pathway during extracellular pH changes in the isolated perfused amphibian heart. Extracellular alkalosis (pH 8.5 or 9.5) maximally activated p38-MAPK within 2 min (4.17- and 3.20-fold, respectively) and this effect was reversible since the kinase phosphorylation levels decreased upon reperfusing the heart with normal Tris-Tyrode's buffe...
متن کاملCalcium, magnesium, and oxidative stress in hyperaldosteronism.
Hyperaldosteronism has been demonstrated to be associated with magnesium loss in the urine and hypomagnesemia1 as part of the syndrome of metabolic alkalosis and hypokalemia that characterizes this condition. In this issue of Circulation, Chhokar et al2 demonstrate the consequences of metabolic changes in rats subjected to aldosterone infusion in the presence of excess salt that result in hypoc...

متن کاملAcid-base Monitoring of Open-heart Surgery.
The techniques and interpretation of acid-base studies on patients undergoing open-heart surgery with extracorporeal circulation are described. The ;normal' range and duration of changes in 35 surviving patients are given; these were essentially of respiratory rather than of metabolic origin, being a respiratory alkalosis induced by the anaesthetist before perfusion, and a respiratory acidosis ...
